In this case, it is assumed that an underpackaging situation is considered, i.e. the optimization of environmental performance targets the reduction of food waste.
Check the different possibilities to improve packaging functionality.
Does the packaging protect the food? Improve the mechanical performances of the packaging system by using thicker primary packaging, using alternative materials, improve the secondary packaging.
Does the packaging preserve the food? Target a shelf life extension thanks (depending on the product) to a better barrier, use modified atmosphere, improve packaging breathing, and adapt packaging to alternative food processes.
Check the supply chain performance and the related adaptation of the packaging.
